Earth Covenant Ministry is a partnership among congregations of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta and other faith-based organizations and individuals responding to the biblical and denominational call to renew right relationship with God's Earth. This ministry provides support and oversight for an ordained minister who will work among the Presbytery's congregations to:
- Integrate the call to care for God's creation into the church's teaching and ministry of the Word and Sacrament
- Provide resources for education, worship, spiritual renewal and practical application
- Nurture the growth of a creation-care network across the Presbytery
- Create Presbytery-wide and ecumenical events for education, action, public witness and advocacy
- Work with national and local faith-based networks as well as local environmental organizations
WHY?
As the theater of divine glory, creation manifests God's free and providential grace for all life. God established a covenant with human beings and all living things through Noah, that we may live as responsible stewards and partners in sustaining God's creation. We, however, have violated this covenant and now threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. Consequently, the sustaining web of life, including God's people, cries out for wholesome healing and newness.
Along with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the church catholic, we seek through prayer, study, worship and action to respond faithfully to God's call to renew a right relationship with creation. This call touches every aspect of faith, both personal and corporate, as the body of Christ that we are. Therefore, we support a new ministry that will take the lead in integrating creation-care into all areas of the church's life and public witness.
